Phonics and Early Reading at Central

In line with the latest Department for Education recommendations, Central Primary has chosen to introduce Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised as our systematic, synthetic phonics (SSP) program to teach early reading and spelling this term.  The program draws on excellent practice, and is based on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.

We have been busy training all of our staff to use this exciting new program in preparation for our launch this term.  However, we know that your engagement in your child’s phonics is an important key to their success.  With this in mind, we will be running parent workshops and information weeks this term.  The focus of these events will be the following:

  • The outline of the program for each year group
  • How to use phonics to blend to read words
  • How children learn to read and write tricky words
  • How we teach reading and spelling
  • Reading at home

Watch this space for further details.  In the meantime, if you would like to find out a little more about the SSP program, visit
