Learning in Nursery

This week we have been reading the story Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. Children were encouraged to anticipate events and talk about what they see on the pages of the book.

We became reading detectives and asked some comprehension questions like: Where do you think the dogs are going? Who jumps over a chain to leave their house? Which dog is skinny and bony? How many dogs are there? What are their names?

Children had the opportunity to discuss whether they prefer cats or dogs. They talked about their favourite animals and if they have pets at home.

In child initiated learning we set up the role-play area as a vet. Children enjoyed pretending to be vets and role-played as dog or pet owners.

As the weather is getting nicer, children really enjoyed being outdoor planting seeds and bulbs and taking care of our plants. Children enjoyed looking for mini beasts using magnifying glasses in our garden.

At home, if you are planting seeds encourage children to talk about the seeds, asking questions like What shape are the seed pods? What do they feel like? Which ones are smooth and which ones are spiky or rough? Where are the seeds? What do they feel like? Do they have any patterns on them? What do plants need to grow? We would love to see photos on Tapestry.
