European Day of Languages






To celebrate the European Day of Languages, which was the 26th of September, each year group took part in 

different activities.

Year 1, learnt that animals make different sounds in different languages. Did you know that a rooster sounds like cock-a-doodle-doo in English, Kikiriki in Spanish, Cocorico in French and Kukuriki in Polish? Children had lots of fun discovering and comparing the sounds of many animals.

Year 2 did a show & tell and children really enjoyed sharing their knowledge and culture. They even taught each other how to say hello and class words in many different languages. Everyone was excited about the activity and amazed at how many different languages and cultures are represented in each class.

Year 3 linked the activity to their PSHE lesson and created a flag of a country that meant something to them and wrote the word “love” and “dreams” in the language of that country. Some of the flags are truly amazing and I was very pleased to see that may children can not only speak but also write another language.

Forest class made flags that represent their identities and discussed similarities and differences between the flags.

Year 4 did a quiz on languages spoken in the world. The quiz was quite tricky but they did really well. They managed, as a class, to have most of the answers correct. They even got a higher score than me. So well done.

Year 5 did an oracy task and discussed “why learn languages?” Children were passionate about the topic and had an amazing discussion. Teachers and I were very pleased to see how children value and appreciate our diverse cultural heritage. I was amazed to find out that in Walnut class, children are exposed to 22 languages on a daily basis within their homes and family.

Year 6 illustrated and translated an idiom from a different country. I have learnt many new idioms and some are really interesting. It was fun sharing them with the class and I really enjoyed the illustrations.

We are extremely lucky to have such a vibrant and diverse community representing so many cultures, religions and languages from around the world and I am very pleased that all of our children are proud of their cultural heritage and enjoy sharing it with each other. It expands their knowledge and open their eyes to the wider world and prepare them to become true global citizens.
