Autumn 1 in Year 5

Autumn 1

We began our year in Year 5 with our contribution to the whole school topic based upon the wonderful book, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse. First, we explored the text to find connections between the actions of the characters in the book and our school Learning Superheroes. The children then used water colours to create their own artwork that illustrated a meaningful quote from the book around our year group theme of persistence.

Although school life looks and feels a little different at the moment, we are so proud of how the children have settled into their new routines. During playtime, we have practiced new inclusive yet socially distanced games such as, hot potato, wink murder and kick cricket. We have also had the opportunity to take part in extra lunchtime PE club with the sports coaches.

In Art and Design, during welcome week, the children learned about the history and traditions of Japanese Kimono. Then, used their new knowledge to plan and design an Obi to match the design brief. We can’t wait to see the finished articles come to life!

Hannah Hoch has been our inspiration during our Art lessons. After evaluating the artist’s work, the children experimented with different textures and collage techniques to create their own interpretations of Hannah’s work. Their final pieces reflected mood, feelings and emotions using a range of colours and media.

Although there are currently some new restrictions around Music teaching, even Covid couldn’t stop us from enjoying and appreciating music, writing our own rhythm notations and performing them in small groups.

Curiosity abounds in Science this half term, with the children really engaging with our ‘forces’ topic. Using our working scientifically skills, we have developed our own questions and formulated investigations to test their hypothesis. These lessons required lots of cooperation, teamwork, oracy skills and a little bit of hope but the end results were worth it!

We can’t wait to continue our learning journey together into Autumn 2. Have a restful half term and stay safe and well.

See you in a week!
